Cuisine

Italian cuisine is defined by simplicity, high-quality ingredients, and deep regional traditions, emphasizing fresh, seasonal foods such as olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, herbs, vegetables, cheeses, and cured meats. Rather than heavy sauces or complex techniques, Italian cooking focuses on balance and allowing individual flavors to shine. The cuisine varies widely by region, with Northern Italy favoring butter, cream, risotto, polenta, and fresh egg pasta; Central Italy known for olive oil–based dishes, legumes, and simple pastas; Southern Italy highlighting tomatoes, seafood, olive oil, and dried pasta, including pizza; and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia featuring bold flavors influenced by Mediterranean and Arab cultures. Core dishes include pasta in countless forms, pizza, risotto, seafood, meats, vegetables, and iconic cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano, mozzarella, and pecorino. Traditional meals follow a structured progression from antipasto to primo, secondo with contorno, and dolce, reflecting Italy’s strong connection between food, culture, and regional identity.
