Overview

The Department of Urology offers a fully accredited, training program in Urology. One year of training in general surgery is required for admission to the program. The staff of the department includes a full-time chairman assisted by two full-time and 6 voluntary urologic surgeons who devote a large portion of their time to Resident teaching. All members of the staff participate in weekly conferences. We are proud to state that our department has a 100% pass rate on both the oral and written boards for the past 10 years. The Department of Urology is responsible for a large clinical service that includes both inpatient and outpatient units, and an active clinical and basic science research program. A full complement of urology is covered throughout the five years including urologic oncology, urologic trauma, endocrinology, infertility, sexual dysfunction, neurourology and urodynamics, female urology, and pediatric urology. These services are offered with state-of-the-art technology and surgical techniques:

Dr. Frederick A. Gulmi
Chairman and Program Director
Director of Robotic Surgery

Dr. Frederick Gulmi is a 1981 graduate of The Universidad Central Del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Postgraduate training began with an internship as a Flexible Intern at The Long Island College Hospital, followed by one year of General Surgery at The Nassau County Medical Center and his Urology Residency and Chief Residency at The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. After completing his residency at Brookdale, Dr. Gulmi became the Frederick Marshall Urology Fellow at The New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical School, focusing his training on Renal Physiology and Endourology. Once his fellowship was completed Dr. Gulmi returned to the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center as an Attending Urologist and the Physician-in-Charge of Residency Training. He has maintained an academic appointment in The Department of Urology at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, currently holding an academic rank as an Assistant Professor of Urology. In July of 2006 Dr. Gulmi was appointed Chairman and Residency Program Director of The Department of Urology at The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Gulmi’s academic career began during his residency training achieving the awards of honorable mention, second prize and first prize at The Valentine Residency Essay Contest held annually at The New York Academy of Medicine. He has authored and coauthored numerous original research articles, review articles and chapters in textbooks, including a chapter on “The Pathophysiology of Urinary Tract Obstruction” in two editions of Campbell’s Textbook of Urology. Currently, Dr. Gulmi is on the editorial review board of the Journal of Urology. His main interest now is in minimally invasive surgical techniques as they apply to urology. This would include percutaneous renal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. The robotic surgery is performed with the state-of-the-art daVinci-Si© 3-Dimensional High Definition Robot.

He is a member of The New York Section of the American Urological Association, The American Urological Association, The Society of University Urologists and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine as well as the past Secretary and President of the Section of Urology of the New York Academy of Medicine. He has also served as the past Brooklyn District Representative on the Board of Directors of The New York Section of the American Urological Association. Currently, Dr. Gulmi is the Secretary-Elect to the Board of Directors of the New York Section of the American Urologic Association and the Vice-Chairman of Credentials of the National Urology Ultrasound Faculty.

 

Dr. Unni M. M. Mooppan
Adult and Pediatric Urology

Dr. Unni Mooppan has been on the faculty of the Department of Urology since July of 1981. He deals with a variety of Adult Urological cases, including various types of malignancies, female urology, impotence and urolithiasis. In addition, he does Pediatric Urology; and has been the Physician in Charge of Pediatric Urology from the very beginning of his faculty appointment at Brookdale in 1981.

Dr. Mooppan did his Medical School and Post Graduate training in General Surgery at two premier medical institutions of India: He completed his MD from JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Education and Research) in Pondicherry, India, in 1970. He obtained his M.S. (Master of Surgery) in General Surgery from PGI (Post Graduate Institute) in Chandigarh, India; and continued to work at that institution till 1976. After coming to the USA in 1976, he completed his Urology Residency and became Board Certified in Urology; and also became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Mooppan graduated from the Medical School with “Maxima Cum Laude” and as the “Best Outgoing Graduate” of the year. At the Post Graduate Institute, he was awarded the Silver Medal for holding the First Rank in the Master of Surgery course and examination. In the United States, during the residency training in Urology, he obtained the First Prize in 1978 and the Second Prize in 1979 in the FC Valentine Resident Essay Contest at New York Academy of Medicine, conducted by the New York Section of AUA. He has presented more than 50 papers at National Meetings and has published 54 papers in various peer reviewed Scientific Journals. He has authored chapters in two text books of Urology.

A member of the American Urological Association ( AUA ), Dr. Mooppan also belongs to the New York Academy of Medicine, Association of Kerala Medical Graduates ( AKMG ) in North America, American Association of Indian Urologists, and the American Association of Physicians from India ( AAPI ).

 

Dr. Rajiv Saini
Voiding Dysfunction and Neurourology

Dr. Rajiv Saini is a Board Certified Urologist. He returned to the Department of Urology at The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center as a urology attending and a full-time faculty member in 2007.

Dr. Saini was the last Urology residency to complete his residency under Dr. Hong Kim (Chairman Emeritus) at Brookdale in 2006. He then went to Weill-Cornell Medical College/New York-Presbyterian Hospital to complete a fellowship in Voiding Dysfunction and Neurourology. As part of his fellowship training, Dr. Saini was involved with the diagnosis and management of conditions such as overactive bladder, male and female urinary incontinence, bladder outlet obstruction and benign prostatic hyperplasia. He was trained in advanced techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of voiding dysfunction including video urodynamics, and surgical procedures for the treatment of male and female urinary incontinence and retention, female pelvic organ prolapse as well as complex neurogenic voiding dysfunction resulting from spinal cord injury or disease. These techniques include male and female slings, male artificial urinary sphincter, laser prostatectomy and thermotherapy for BPH, and sacral neuromodulation. In addition to the above, he also performs general urologic procedures.

His academic activities include a variety of publications on topics ranging from the pharmacologic treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary incontinence to the management of BPH with minimally invasive techniques. He has presented various topics at national and international meetings. In addition, he has been a course instructor and surgical skills proctor for BPH courses offered through the American Urological Association.

Dr. Saini attended Binghamtom University where he received his undergraduate degree in Biology in 1995. He graduated with his medical degree from SUNY Downstate in 2000. He is an active member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Urodynamics & Female Urology, and the Indian American Urological Association. He is married with 3 children.
